Intraoperative
Neurophysiological Monitoring / Evoked Potential Testing
Nerve structures such as the brain, spinal cord,
and peripheral nerves may be at risk during some orthopedic, brain,
vascular, or facial surgeries. Intraoperative monitoring provides
the surgeon real-time information which can be used to maximize
the success of the surgical procedure. This type of monitoring
is widely considered to be the standard of care. Highly trained
technologists Certified in Neurophysiological Intraoperative Monitoring
by the American Board of Registration of Evoked Potential Technologists
perform this monitoring.
Evoked potential testing can be a useful adjunct
to other imaging studies such as MRI in evaluating disorders of
the central nervous system. This testing is done on an out-patient
basis.
